Time to Talk Day

Writer: East Kennet PCNEast Kennet PCN

As February rolls in and we look forward to lighter evenings we can often carry with us some of the darkness, isolation and loneliness of those Winter months.  Time to talk day is run by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness in England, in partnership with Co-op.

Time to talk day highlights the importance of supporting each other whether its friends, family, colleagues or a stranger at the bus stop, let’s get talking about mental health. We are often still uncomfortable talking about our health especially when it comes to our mental health however, we all have it. Good or bad mental health impacts everyone, its fluid and changes like the UK weather!

Nearly two thirds of us in the UK put on a brave face and avoid these conversations, and half of us won't talk as we don’t want to add to others who may be struggling themselves. We don’t always have the answers, nor should we. Just listening and letting someone talk can be enough sometimes, it can encourage others to open up and we can help each other along the way.

With that in mind having some knowledge of what’s out there can give us the confidence to start conversations.

So where can we direct people who need more help?

There are lots of great services out there to support or to listen, here are a few of my favourites:

Mind - Call 0300 102 1234 www.mind.org.uk

Rethink Mental Illness - www.rethink.org

Access Community Mental Health - 08082 803528

So let’s get that kettle on, send a message, pick up the phone, reach out and get comfortable talking about mental health.
